Columbia Road shuts down Sunday for repair

A major traffic disruption in Grand Forks began Sunday as Columbia Road closed for the summer to undergo a facelift.

The $4.2 million construction project shut down the road from its DeMers Avenue interchange to 11th Avenue South in an attempt to smooth the street and expand it to six lanes.

“It’s going to be quite disruptive to the traveling public,” said Assistant City Engineer Mark Walker. “There is a lot of traffic on that road.”

Nearly 26,000 vehicles travel on Columbia daily and will have to use detours and alternate routes to get to their destinations.

The road was closed by 5 p.m. Sunday. It is scheduled to partially reopen in mid-August with all construction on this section expected to wrap up in October.
