Study: Smoking bans had no economic impact

A study released Monday indicates Grand Forks restaurant, truck stop and bars sales were not affected by smoking bans implemented in 2005 and 2010.

Sponsored by the Grand Forks Tobacco Free Coalition, the study says the bans had no impact when you control for outside factors such as the U.S.-Canadian exchange rate, GF’s overall economy and, of course, weather conditions.

Some business owners will no doubt cry fowl, but keep in mind the data was not gathered at an individual level but rather at an industry level. It is entirely plausible local businesses could have been benefited or harmed by the bans.
